Utica Comets continued to roll with a 5-2 win on Sunday afternoon against the Providence Bruins

Jake Virtanen tallied the first goal of the game with a solo rush into the offensive zone at 7:58. The forward skated around Tommy Cross and fired a wrist shot over the glove of Zane McIntyre for his seventh of the year. At 11:51, Alexandre Grenier pulled a backhand shot around McIntyre for his 17th of the year to give the Comets a 2-0 lead. Chad Billins registered the lone assist on both goals.

Michael Carcone extended the lead with his third of the year at 10:15 of the second period with a wrist shot in the slot. Pascal Pelletier and Mike Zalewski assisted on the goal. The onslaught continued with a goal from Curtis Valk at 15:49 on a loose puck near the post. His 16th of the year was assisted by Carcone and Zalewski.

The Bruins responded early in the third period with a goal at 4:16 from Austin Czarnik. His third of the year was assisted by Matt Grzelcyk and Jake DeBrusk. Chris Porter added another goal by sending a rebound behind Thatcher Demko for his fifth of the year at 7:55. The goal was assisted by DeBrusk and Chris Casto to cut the Comets lead in half. McIntyre was pulled for the extra attacker in the final minutes and the Bruins continued a heavy offensive attack in efforts to tie the game. However, Cody Kunyk finished the scoring by finding the open net with assists from Grenier and Tom Nilsson.

Demko improved his record to 18-12-4 with 28 saves. McIntyre suffered his fourth loss of the season and now holds a record of 16-4-3 with 23 saves in the game.

The Comets play their third consecutive road game next Friday in Albany against the Devils at 7 p.m. at the Times Union Center. The game can be heard live on 94.9 KROCK and viewed on AHL Live.

Friday March 17: Syracuse Crunch

Borna Rendulic struck first with 6:38 remaining in the opening period, firing a wrist shot past Mike McKenna for his 12th goal of the year. Pelletier celebrated his 800th pro game by extending the Comets lead to 2-0 with five minutes to go in the middle frame. The lead was cut to 2-1 towards the end of the second.

Four minutes into the final period, Darren Archibald restored the two-goal lead for the Comets on the power play to earn his team leading 20th goal of the year.Three minutes later, the Crunch scored two goals within 31 seconds to tie the game. One minute later after the pair of goals, Mike Zalewski scored the game winning goal, tipping a point shot from Jordan Subban for his fourth goal of the season. Thatcher Demko finished with 35 saves for his eighth straight win and improve his record to 17-11-4.

 

Saurday March 18 Bridgeport Sound Tigers

The Sound Tigers struck twice in the first period with goals from Andrew Rowe and Tanner Fritz. After a scoreless second period, Carter Verhaeghe extended the Bridgeport lead to a 3-0 score 4:27 into the final period. Evan McEneny tallied the lone goal for the Comets with a power play goal. The Sound Tigers solidified the win with an empty net goal.

Thatcher Demko’s record dropped to 17-12-4 with 24 stops. The loss ended his win streak at eight games.

 

Utica Comets Win 6th Straight Game At the Aud Over Binghampton Senators

Utica, NY – The Utica Comets battered the Binghamton Senators by a score of 5-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Utica Memorial Auditorium.

Darren Archibald opened the scoring with his 19th of the year at 8:31 of the first period on the power play. Curtis Valk setup Archibald for a one-timer goal on a play that began with a pass from Borna Rendulic. With another power play later in the period, Rendulic extended the Comets lead. His 11th of the year was scored on a wrist shot from the slot. The goal was assisted by Archibald and Valk at 17:32 to give the Comets a 2-0 lead through the first frame.

8:55 into the second period, Mike Zalewski scored in front of the net for his third of the year. Marco Roy and Archibald assisted on the only goal in the period. Thatcher Demko continued his solid play by stopping all 14 shots through 40 minutes.

Evan McEneny extended the lead to a 4-0 score with a shot from the point that slowly crossed over the goal line after an initial save from Chris Driedger. His seventh of the year was assisted by Pascal Pelletier and Rendulic. Pelletier concluded the scoring at 6:19 of the third period with his eight of the year from Colby Robak and Michael Carcone.

Demko remained perfect and won his seventh straight game and collected his second shutout of the year with 21 saves to improve his record to 16-11-4. Driedger stopped 31 shots to fall to a record of 10-16-2

The Comets scored twice on six power plays while the team killed both penalties.

Utica Comets Win Streak Broken With Loss To Lehigh Valley Phantoms

Allentown, PA – The Utica Comets lost by a score of 4-1 to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms on Saturday night at the PPL Center.

Colin McDonald scored just 41 seconds into the game with a one-timer past Michael Garteig. His 22nd of the season was assisted from Scott Laughton and Cole Bardreau. With a four-minute power play, the Phantoms extended their lead in the second half of the man advantage at 9:34 of the first period. T.J. Brennan fired a wrist shot past Garteig for his 18th of the year. His 10th power play goal of the year was assisted by Andy Miele and Greg Carey.

The Phantoms continued the attack in the second period with a goal at 12:16. Nicolas Aube-Kubel scored on a one-timer for his eighth of the year from Miele and Brennan. Through 40 minutes of hockey, the Phantoms carried a three-goal lead but the Comets led in shots on goal by a margin of 30-13.

Cody Kunyk scored the first, and only, Comets goal of the night with his 12th of the season at 13:16 of the third period. Jake Virtanen and Curtis Valk assisted on the goal. Garteig was pulled for the extra attacker which Travis Sanheim took advantage of to score his 10th of the year. The unassisted goal ended the scoring of the night to give the Phantoms the 4-1 win.

Garteig made 22 saves on 25 shots and fell to a record of 0-2-2 on the season. Alex Lyon made 36 saves to collect his 24th win of the year.

The Comets killed four of five penalties and were held scoreless on three power play chances.

Utica Comets Roll To 6th Straight Win Over Bridgeport Sound Tigers

Utica, NY – The Utica Comets secured the team’s sixth straight win with a 2-1 regulation victory against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Friday night at the Utica Memorial Auditorium.

Thatcher Demko and Jaroslav Halak picked up where they left off from Sunday’s goaltender duel. The two netminders turned aside all scoring chances in the first period. The Comets were denied on two different power play chances and 12 total shots. Demko stopped all seven shots in the frame.

Curits Valk broke the scoreless tie with 5:08 left in the second period. His 15th of the year was scored on a backhand shot with assists from Jake Virtanen and Cody Kunyk. The goal occurred directly after a fight between Cole Cassels and Kyle Burroughs. Towards the end of the stanza, Borna Rendulic was penalized on a hooking call. The Sound Tigers began to grab momentum but the score remained 1-0 headed into the third period.

Michael Carcone extended the Comets lead with a one-timer goal in front of the net. The goal, scored 6:36 into the third period, was assisted by Pascal Pelletier on a pass from behind the net. Kellen Jones cut the lead to 2-1 with his fourth of the year scored on a wrist shot as soon as he entered the Utica zone. Burroughs and Devon Toews assisted on the goal at 9:40. Halak was pulled for the extra attacker in the closing minutes but the Comets held on to cruise to five straight wins on home ice.

Demko won his six straight game by stopping 23 of 24 shots and improving his record to 15-11-4. Halak lost his third game to the Comets, all of which in regulation. The goaltender stopped 26 of 28 shots to move his record to 15-4-3. The other regulation loss occurred against the Providence Bruins on February 24.

The Comets killed the lone penalty in the game and were scoreless on two power play chances.

The Comets visit the Lehigh Valley Phantoms Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. The game will be broadcasted live from the PPL Center on 94.9 KROCK and viewed on AHL Live.

Carter Bancks began the scoring with his eighth of the year 11:41 into the game. The forward scored on a wrist shot that hit the post and went into the back of the net. Assists came from Joseph LaBate and Wacey Hamilton. Sound Tigers goaltender Jaroslav Halak stopped 11 of the Comets’ shots in the period, this included two power play opportunities.

At 9:34 of the second period, Ryan Pulock fired a slap shot past Thatcher Demko for his 12th goal of the season. The goal was scored directly after a faceoff win with assists from Devon Toews and Joshua Winquist. With 41 seconds left in the second stanza, LaBate ripped a wrist shot past Halak for his fourth of the year. Cole Cassels and Colby Robak assisted on the goal to return the Comets to a one-goal lead through 40 minutes of hockey.

The Comets locked down defensively and protected the lead in the third period. Despite the Sound Tigers pulling Halak for the extra attacker, the score remained and the Comets won 2-1.

Demko won his fifth straight game and third game in as many days. The rookie improved his record to 14-11-4 with 24 saves. Halak made 26 saves but his record dropped to 14-3-3.

The Comets did not score on three power play opportunities while the team killed all three penalties.

Thatcher Demko’s Shutout Gives Utica Comets Win Over Albany Devils

Utica, NY – Thatcher Demko made 38 saves for his first professional shutout as the Utica Comets beat the Albany Devils by a score of 3-0.

The teams battled to a scoreless tie through the first 20 minutes. Demko turned aside 11 shots while Devils netminder Mackenzie Blackwood stopped six shots.

Jake Virtanen broke open the scoring eight minutes into the second period with a one-timer from Evan McEneny. After a video review, the goal stood with Cody Kunyk collecting the secondary assist. Virtanen scored his sixth of the year breaking a 16-game goalless drought. 4:05 later, Wacey Hamilton scored on a rebound attempt to give the Comets a 2-0 lead. Colby Robak and Ashton Sautner assisted on his eighth of the year. Demko stopped 16 shots in the fame to carry the lead into the third period.

At 7:02 of the third period and one second left in a Comets power play, Borna Rendulic scored on a one-timer from Pascal Pelletier. His tenth of the year was also assisted by Pelletier and Mike Zalewski. The Comets finished the period without allowing a goal despite a late surge by the Devils.

Demko improved his record to 13-11-4 with 38 saves. Blackwood made 24 saves but his record dropped to 11-10-2.

The Comets scored once on four power play opportunities while the team killed all four penalties.
