What I Really Want

  1. Hi, I wonder if you can help.
I’m writing a scene for a novel in which two people have to catch a freight train out of New York City in 1870.
They walk to the freight yard from somewhere around the ferry to what was then Blackwell’s Island (now Roosevelt Island, which was on Fifty Eighth Street.
I need to know where the freight yard was, and if possible, if they could realistically hop a freight train from there.
    Thanks in advance.

    1. Blackwell Island was renamed Roosevelt Island in 1935.

Railroads did not seem to go on East Side of NY then (and now). More probable was someplace on West Side. Will try and find a better place for you.
